The cultivation of vines in this beautiful region bathed by the Ebro River and sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain chain boasts a tradition that has shaped the landscape for centuries to make Sonsierra a place of unique beauty where the grape-growing covers the land, and wine-related architecture becomes visible among the vineyards.
It is estimated that viticulture arrived in Sonsierra from the Mediterranean peoples up the Ebro valley, and since ancient times this part of the world became a major center of production. Proof of this is the high concentration of field winepresses (Called "Lagares") and "Guardaviñas" existing in this area of La Rioja, which are undoubtedly the best example of Rioja’s folk wine-related architecture.
